  • Does Europe Have a Future?
  • Course Number: S26PRES200A
    Date: 5/26/2026
    Times: 2:00 PM–3:30 PM
    Day: Tu
    Seats Available: 47
Building: Campbell Center (opens in new tab)

For more than seventy-five years after World War II, Europe maintained a close political, economic, and military partnership with the United States while gradually overcoming historic rivalries and building the European Union. Today, that long-standing relationship faces new strains amid shifting geopolitical priorities and global conflicts.

Steven Kramer who taught for 30 years at the National Defense University and co-directed its European program, will explore the changing dynamics of the transatlantic relationship. Drawing on decades of research and writing on European history and politics, he will examine the challenges Europe faces as it responds to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, questions about future security arrangements, and internal political pressures within European democracies.
